The race will be Saturday August 6th at 6:00 PM EDT (3:00 PM PDT) on the Pure server.

- Unless there’s popular revolt for an alternate date.  There will be more races as well.

I noticed that the natural rivers around Spawn were nearly connected, and decided they should be.  Check the original thread if you’re curious.  Tons of work went into this course from a large talent pool, and I’m enormously grateful for everyone’s help!

The race takes about an hour and fifteen minutes.  Aside from the fun, lotsa PRIZES:

1st

8 stacks of iron blocks

diamond horse armor

3 saddles

3 nametags

$10,000 Pure Cash

2nd

4 stacks of iron blocks

gold horse armor

2 saddles

2 nametags

$5,000 Pure Cash

3rd

1 stack of iron blocks

iron horse armor

1 saddle

1 nametag

$1,000 Pure Cash

All other racers who finish the course will get 1 stack of iron ingots and $200 Pure Cash

The start / finish line is southwest of Astoria, and can be accessed by typing /res tp boatrace or by rail from Astoria’s Central Station.

There are tons of great builds in the area, so make sure to spend time there before the race:

Boat Dispensing Area

Visitors Areas - Grandstands for spectators, shops, restaurants

Racer Cabins - Racers can get dyed leather hats and jackets here

Respond to this thread if you’d like to race.  There are 21 spots in the starting gates which we’re unlikely to fill, but we can accommodate more if needed behind those.  The later you sign up, the worse your starting position will be, but that will have very little impact on a race this long.  Your signup number is also your cabin access, if you want your free racing clothes.  Follow the signs at the TP point.

The starting gate has an audible countdown before the gate opens.

There will be several night cycles throughout the race, so skeletons are a real hazard.  They can shoot you and your boat, which either ejects you from your boat, or can even destroy your boat, so BRING EXTRA BOATS.  You can have weapons to fight mobs in case you have a crazy lead and want to snipe a skeleton before it can de-boat you, but breaking other racers’ boats will disqualify you.

Landmarks and Features:

At the start of the race follow the traffic sign, or you’ll be blocked by fence.  Shortly after there’s a one-way fence that will open as you approach.  After that gate, do NOT turn right, go straight to continue the race.

gallery_1949_114_47211.jpg

Whenever you see a line of light buoys, don’t cross through them.  Either stay between buoys and land, or between two lines of buoys.  Cutting through them will only take you off course, as there are no shortcuts.

gallery_1949_114_93222.jpg

There are a few areas that look like dead ends, but are actually boat elevators.  Boat up to the slime blocks and let them launch you to the next level.  Sometimes it takes a few tries, so once you’re on the slime, don’t keep pressing forward or you’ll get stuck at the wall.  Just sit on the slime until you’re up.  The elevators work in both directions, so if it looks like you’ll boat off a ledge, go for it!  You’ll just fall safely to a lower level and continue.

gallery_1949_114_15929.jpg

Forks in the river all go the same way.

Success in this course depends on avoiding collisions, picking the best path between corners, and luck avoiding skeletons.

As always, the most important rule is, don’t be a dick. ;)

After the race: Come to the winner’s podium to see all the gloating and tears at the presentation ceremony. Eat up all the cake and party down.

Here's a LARGE map of the course.

I'm so on board!

It's on my calendar!

So would the "don't be a dick" caveat bar me from being a river pirate and raiding other people's vessels?

Correct.  Piracy, while generally awesome, shall henceforth be reserved for Sea of Thieves or similar.

Hi, I won't take part in the race but I will give the start signal and the countdown from the top of the control-tower. Good luck to all racers and think about using the cabin for your preparation or just relax before the race .. it is up to you. :D Let the race begin! :D

I need to take some time to thank the many contributors to this enormous race.  My memory is garbage and this project started last October, so please jump in here to highlight good deeds and remind me what you and others did!

First, Astro's enthusiasm can't be overstated!  He was on board from the start with excitement, ideas, heavy lifting, organizing digging parties, and hosting the Start/Finish area just outside Astoria.

Cyn, our Beloved Prankster/Protector/Overlord, has dug and blasted and scouted and redstoned and advised and planned and inspired.

Murdock provided the area with an awesome Dragon Head seafood restaurant, and support throughout.

Kostarius has created beautiful builds at the Star/Finish area, and offered constant support and wicked humor for all occasions.

LifeSnatcher helped with some nice river tunnel upgrades, and more back breaking digging chores.  Where'd you go, Life?

Time, Fan, IronSteve, and [insert names my brain erased here] dug their ASSES off around Astoria, through the difficult areas that were not originally natural river areas.  All that work happened while I was digging other parts of the circuit, and dreading the "Astorian Dredging Nightmare."  Thanks to you guys, I was able to salvage a few shreds of my tattered sanity.

Thanks to DictatorBarric for donating materials!

Thanks to everyone who dug, built, supported, showed interest, and for any reason accepted my flight of obsessive fervor.  You're all awesome!!

I've put a reminder in my planner, so I should be available.

Looking forwards to racing, maybe some of the builders should consider racing as well instead of just moderating ;)

So I'm pissed. Kelsey fails at planning things properly, and now I'm going to be busy on Saturday...

I want to see all the pictures and I'll even try to get that minechat thing working so I can at least be there in spirit.

Life happens, therefore we will have more races!

Four people is pretty low turnout for this course, so I'll work on outreach...

Tomorrow is the day, but two things:

* We only have five racers.

* I have a family situation.  I might have time, but if not there's no reason to stop the race.

If the race goes on without me (all that's needed is a couple of button and lever actions, and some accounting of the finish order), I'll pay out the prizes into signed chests later.

For the racers that have signed up, you can decide if you want to move ahead or postpone, but don't base the decision on my availability, 'cause I can't predict when I'll have time.

If you race, RACE HARD, find the shortest path between corners, bring extra boats, and look out for skeletons!

Also, maybe I'll be there anyway. :)

Looks like I can probably make it.  Due to low expected turnout, I think we should have another race pretty soon after. :)

I might show up close to race time, so please have people read the entire first post before getting started so they won't be confused about some of the finer points.  Go ahead and recruit more racers if you can, as IronSteve pointed out last night, most people don't read the forums.
