I've done a round of obsessive riverbank tweaks, and the result is a course that's a little nicer to look at, makes some more sense in a few places, and is a little tighter and windy-er overall.

 

Acis has expressed interest in adding obstacles and other interesting things to the course, so let's brainstorm in this thread, and then organize building parties!

 

Anyone not familiar with the course, it's a one hour and fifteen minute loop around spawn.  Go to the starting area any time you have an hour to kill: /res tp boatrace

 

Many Bothans died to bring us this course. :(

 

I'll edit this post with an official list of stuff we'll include here:

 

1. add waterfalls (with lifts in opposite direction)

2. use lift tech to launch racers to impede progress allowing people to catch up in a fun way

3. floating animal hordes

4. [more happy fun race items here]

Waterfalls/drops would be awesome, but I'm not sure how you would keep the bidirectional layout if you added those.

We already have boat lifts that you fall from going the opposite direction, and any place you want to build a waterfall would need a lift or lifts in the other direction.  I think the only drawback to waterfalls is that for 95% of the course it's completely flat, so falls would require tons of building.  The only height differences are around Astoria, so instead of using the lifts bi-directionally as they work now, we could branch paths so that it's falls one way and the existing lifts the other.  The fastest height change is on the south wall of Astoria with two lifts in a row, so that'd make the best spot for falls.  We have to check how steep falls can be before they sink boats instantly.

 

Another thing discussed briefly on the server is using lift technology randomly across a portion of river that has a high chance of launching you in the air as you try to pass.  It'd work well to do for a long stretch in a checkerboard pattern to slow down a large number of racers at a time, giving people a good chance to catch up and re-cluster, all while having fun getting chucked around.

My favorite obstacle is animals :) I used to have an ocean of animals, and paddling around them was quite fun.

Things have been quiet in this thread, so there haven't been any updates. :)  So far there are only three suggestions, and no plans for time and location of building.  I'll keep adding peoples' ideas to the first post as they pop up.

Do speed potions work for boats?  Maybe have a section that randomly throws splash potions on the racers to hinder or hasten their progress.
