#2169 Treasure Hunt!

Posted by Acis on 03 July 2014 - 07:44 AM

If anyone wants to do this in a team, I'm game. I'll list some pros and cons here so you can decide if our weaknesses and strengths compliment each other so that we may form an efficient and well balanced team.

- Poor grasp of the English language.
- Poor attention span
- Somewhat poor memory
- Really poor attention span because it's Magic The Gathering spoiler season where they show new cards
- May ban you if I get frustrated
- Drawn to the wrong conclusion quickly and will defend those conclusions to the death.
- Despite claiming otherwise: never left ACME, ever. Except for the tunnel that connects to ACME. So poor grasp of where things are at on the map
- The contest host and creator called me a jerkhouse in this topic. Scroll up it's right there
- May or may not backstab you to claim all the prizes after doing zero work
- Somewhat poor memory

- Can fly
- Can ban competitors
- Can burglarise anything

- If Tarq reads that stuff above this section then I'm in trouble

Things coming into places where they do not belong?

Are you finding empty chests, half destroyed buildings and a chat full of verbal diarrhea?

You must have come across an unsupervised child, that is probably being raised by the youtube celebrities and minecraft chat.

Well no worries, I remove children for free, just post their name in this topic and they will be gone within 48 hours!

#2167 Treasure Hunt!

Posted by Mr Fenderson on 03 July 2014 - 04:35 AM

Attached File  tumblr_lbku5gtUyg1qcf7tn.gif   76.83KB   0 downloadsHello Minecarts!

So, I have been thinking about setting up a scavenger/treasure hunt on the Pure server. This competition will be open to all and it will involve the deciphering of clues, the finding of things, the going to places, and the shaking your head at the inanity of any puns, portmanteaus or spoonerisms I will inflict on you during said competition.

That's right. COMPOOTISHUN. Here are the basics I have come up so far:

  • The competition will start at sometime in the near future at a certain point when the first clue will be announced LIVE in game. There will probably be cake.
  • You can enter the game with a PARTNER or go SOLO. Duos will share the prize.
  • There will be ten CLUES and ten PUZZLES/TASKS in ten LOCATIONS. Each clue will lead you to the next loaction. Each puzzle/task will give you one number in an X,Y,Z cooridinate. When you have all ten coordinate numbers, you will have the location of the TREASURE. Run, god damn it!
  • The locations will be in popular areas on the Pure server. The locations/whereabouts will be unknown to anyone but myself.

Now, as for prizes, I'm not sure what you guys would want or what I have to give. I was thinking of a sweepstakes, where every participant pays to enter and the winner takes all. This will also be supplemented with a bunch of stuff that I can think of. If this is an unpopular idea I'll have to think of more stuff.

Thanks to Jellomix for giving me ideas on this, AnToast for a generous book donation and Acis for calling the words that come from my mouth and fingers 'Crypto-Bullshit'. What a jerkhouse.

Let me know if you're into this, Mineshafts!

#1313 Thank you!

Posted by Acis on 24 April 2014 - 07:09 AM

As a lot of you know, yesterday some kids griefed our server and did it in an admittedly clever way, a lot of spawn was covered in water, lava and a lot of blocks were destroyed at random.

Most of this avoided a part of our anti grief prevention.

However! I only had to ask in chat once for help, and everyone on the server wanted to help out!

So with some team effort (and a clever find on Jello's part) we cleaned up spawn in record time, fixing all lava and water.

This shows to me that we have a great community, something other servers could only wish for. With people like you we can get trough anything!

There's now a tiny monument near the spawn market that marks our quick cleanup and team effort  :D

Some practical info in the form of an Q&A though:

Q: I still found a griefed block!
A: Try to fix it yourself it it's only minor / something easily fixed. There's still going to be a few missing blocks. If you can't fix it call in a moderator or admin to patch it up.

Q: building X is still simultaneously soaked and on fire, what do?
A: Besides the laws of common sense being broken here, the best option is to call one of the moderation crew, they can fix it up pretty quickly.

Q: My chestshop signs are messed up, or my chests are locked and I can't acces them!
A: unfortunate side effect of this whole ordeal, Boot did try and lock up most chests for theft prevention though so just ask a moderator to remove the locks now in place. You'll have to re-do any shop signs that were broken though.

Q: Will this griefing stuff happen again?
A: Although I'd like to say no, something like this might happen again one day. After all, kids (and teens) are hormonal, moody, grumpy and burdened with a lot of spare time. We have so many great members that can fix this faster than it can be broken though, so there's that  :D

Q: I still have a question that wasn't asked here
A: Fire away in the comments!

Thanks again for helping out all!

#1204 Gold farm mechanics

Posted by Kino on 30 March 2014 - 01:17 PM

This article explains the mechanics behind the gold farm on pure, and some general mechanics associated with gold farming in minecraft.Hello fellow Minecraftians,

In this article I’d like to explain the mechanics surrounding the gold farm I build on the Pure and Monarch server.

First of all, how does one farm gold?
Well as some of you might know Zombie Pigman have a chance of dropping gold nuggets when they die. So it'll have to be some sort of zombie pigman farm.

But how do you get enough pigman together for the farm to be efficient?
You can build a “common” mob farm in the nether, so pigman will spawn naturally in it, the downside of this is the mob cap. (if there are too many mobs around, no new ones will spawn)
A more efficient way is building it in the overworld using nether portals. Every portal block (the purple field inside the obsidian frame) has a chance of spawning a Zombie Pigman. The portal blocks don’t check for the amount of mobs in the area. This allows a greater build up of Zombie Pigman and thus is more efficient.

What size should you use?
There are a few things to take into account when thinking about the size. Sure, more portal blocks means more Pigman will spawn. The problem is mobs stop moving if they are too far away from a player (with default settings this is 32 blocks).
A farm stretching 200x200 blocks wouldn’t be much faster than a farm stretching 64x64 blocks. Also take into account that large amount of portals will create lag, so don’t overdo it!
The gold farm i designed is 49x49 blocks. The hight should always be the max. portal hight (23 blocks including both obsidian blocks).
To minimize obsidian use, you can use portals size 23x23 only, i didn't do so to keep things symmetrical.

Where should you place the kill room?
The kill room should be very close to the bottom level of the portals. The reason for this is to get the most Pigman to move when you standing in the kill room.Second, Pigman get angry when you hit one of them, so you should make sure all angry Pigman run straight into the mob transportation system (explained later), so they don’t keep running around in the farm, but get killed asap instead. In my design, the kill room is in the center of all the portals, very close to the bottom of the portals.

How do you get the mobs from the portals to the kill room?
To get the Pigman to move out of the portals, place signs (or trap doors) allong the bottom blocks of the portals.

Underneath the portals is a water system, all spots have running water, and they all run into the center of the farm.
On every side of the kill room is an entrance where the Pigman enter the mob elevators. (basically a tunnel upwards with water and signs). On top of the elevators is a connection platform where all elevators are directed to the same block.
This block should be the start of their drop down (to kill drop them 23+ blocks, to damage drop them 21 blocks).

Pigman are dangerous creatures, especially if they have full health. So you must make sure no pigman can escape the farm, or you’ll be in a lot of trouble. That’s why you should first build the entire farm, double check if there is no way for the pigman to get out (including the baby pigman), before you light up all the portals!

About the design:
The design I’ve come up with has 72 nether portals, each one 9x23 blocks (including the obsidian border). Every portal has 7x21=147 portal blocks (the purple blocks in the middle) so in total there are 10584 portal blocks. I used 6 mob elevators (4 normal elevators and 2 baby elevators). Also a switch controls two options: damage mode (xp farm) and kill mode (afk farm).
The design has portals with 9x23 size because of the water mechanics, since water flows 8 blocks it makes the transportation system a lot easier. Finally the design also allows you to switch between afk and damage mode. The trick is to make the elevators just high enough so you can put the kill room at the bottom level of the portals.

If you like to see one in action, the gold farm on the Pure server is the easiest one to check out (since the Monarch farm is underground and protected by towny).
To check it out, got to the Pure server and visit my base (/res tp KinoShop), the farm is upstairs!

For more information, contact Kino :)

I've started a Let's Play series on single player vanilla minecraft, in this series I'm building a Gold/XP farm using these principles. The design is a little different to make it more efficient and increase the speed.

#4600 Minecraft Bridges

Posted by JELLOMIX on 27 January 2017 - 07:12 PM

I’ll shamelessly admit my penchant for architecture. Don’t tell my father; as a bridge engineer who hates to deal with architects, I feel like I would be bringing shame to my family or something like that. It almost goes without saying that, as a child, I was inundated with a slew of popsicle and toothpick bridge projects. That’s not to say that I didn’t thoroughly enjoy every last one of them. I also can add that I still keep engineering in mind every time I create a bridge in Minecraft. In my time playing on the Pure Better In Game Adult Minecraft Server, I’ve built a slew of bridges ranging from small 5 blocks bridges crossing creeks to monster 1000 block long suspension bridges spanning swathes of ocean. I will with, admitted conceit, say that I’ve gotten pretty darn good at crafting the suckers over my years of Minecraft. I’d love to share with you some of the tricks I’ve picked up on how to cross above your canyons, link over your lakes, or even overpass your oceans.Minecraft Bridges

First thing is first when you’re making any bridge in Minecraft. Assess the landscape, determine the type of blocks you’re going to use and choose what kind of bridge you should use to cross the specific area. I would recommend as a first step building a straight one wide dirt line crossing where you want the deck of your bridge to be. Not only will this help you determine the length of the bridge, but also the potential difference in height between the sides of your bridge. This little dirt runner is obviously a must if you’re working in survival, but I would even recommend using it in creative to help out as a reference. Bellow are a few different types of bridges I've used in different circumstances and a few tips on how to construct them. This is by no means an all-inclusive list of bridge types, but instead is a good starting point for determining what type of bridge best suits your situation.

Minecraft Stone Arch Bridge

This is a good type of bridge for getting over small and medium-sized gaps with land that is at the same height on both sides. There are a few good basics to follow when making a bridge like this, and while many of them may seem pretty obvious, I still feel they are worth noting. As the size of the gap increases, make your bridge wider. A good rule of thumb is to make sure your bridge deck is at least one wide for every ten blocks in length. So for example, if you’re crossing a fifty block gap, make sure that your bridge deck is at least five wide to make it still look plausible. Start by building the deck, and practice making the arch of the deck with dirt before you lay down any actual materials if you’re playing in survival. Always bulk up the underside of your bridge if it’s spanning any distance over ten, bridges look far too spindly without the addition of some form of spine under the deck. Finish off by putting in railings that match the curve of your deck.

Minecraft Bridges 13

Diagonal Minecraft Bridge

Sometimes the best bridge for your purpose is a diagonal one. While it may seem incredibly daunting to make a bridge that’s diagonal if you are making a basic Minecraft arch bridge it’s actually not as hard as you would think. If you follow all the same principles of the Stone Arch Bridge and start both sides at the same height, start steep on the sides and gradually level off, and bulk up the bottom of the bridge with a spine, you’ll end up with some of the coolest looking bridges in Minecraft. Like everything in Minecraft, these bridges can be scaled to just about any size, but I feel like they look best covering small or medium-small gaps.

Minecraft Bridges 7

Minecraft Ramp Bridge

Sometimes you have a gap that you’d like to span with an arch that isn’t the same level on each side. While I’m not going to claim to know the technical term for this type of bridge, it’s very useful in many situations, but can prove tricky when it comes time to getting the undercarriage to look just right. The best way to start on bridges like this involves a little foresight and planning starting with measuring the distance to be covered. Always start out on the lower side when you start making the deck. Start your bridge steep and slowly level it out until you’re at the desired height that matches the far side and then level it out and go straight from there. These bridges are best on smaller gaps unless you’re up for doing some math. If you’re up for some math, it’s not too difficult to determine how gradually to slope a bridge based on the height difference on each side and the length of the bridge. Build railings to match and bulk up the bottom of the deck near the center to make it look more realistic.

Minecraft Bridges 6

Small Minecraft Bridge

Sometimes you need to skip some puddles. I’m a frequent builder of tiny bridges since I can’t help but add in all sorts of little streams and rivers into the landscape. There isn’t a whole lot of ways to diversify bridges this small but I recommend making them out of a material that has stairs and slabs to help make small bridges more unique. Placing stairs upside down and then placing slabs next to them is a great way to make railings. These bridges, since they are short, should usually have a flat deck and are always a fun challenge when it comes to making them look unique. Accessorizing is key; using accent materials and even levers, buttons, or posts can make a world of difference in your finished product

Minecraft Bridges 8

Minecraft Bridges 10

Minecraft Truss Bridge

One of my all-time favorite types of bridges in real life and one of the more challenging bridges to build in Minecraft are truss bridges. Another bridge that should have a straight deck (or very slightly curved if it's large), the concept of a truss bridge boils down to utilizing the strength of triangles in real life. Unless you’re scaling up the size most of the truss bridges I’ve made only look good on medium size gaps, no larger than 100. Starting is easy; simply build a flat deck crossing the gap. Reinforce it lightly along the bottom with some extra slabs if it’s a small bridge or use some stairs and full-size blocks to round off the bottom a bit if it’s a large bridge. Using stairs or slabs on a smaller bridge or full-size blocks on a larger bridge start from the center of the bridge build the supports along the sides. On truss bridges, the supports on the side usually look best when they are near the same height as the width of the deck.

Minecraft Bridges 12

Minecraft Rope Bridge

These bridges usually look best when they’re strung about in a jungle. Again, like many of the other style bridges are actually not as difficult to make as they can sometimes look. The basic principle of constructing the deck is pretty much the same as making a regular stone arch bridge except in inverted. Start with your deck at even levels on both sides and start out with a steep slope going down which gradually levels off. These guys are best for medium size gaps. The effect is hard to pull off on small scales and would dip too low for most large gaps. After you make your deck, it’s as simple as making two matching strips of material along each side that parallel the slope of the deck and running railings or blocks down from them to attach them to the deck. These are really fun looking bridges and are actually one of the easiest to make once you know how to make them.

Minecraft Bridges 9

Minecraft Suspension Bridge

When you’ve got a big ass gap to span there is one great solution that’s always a real crowd pleaser, the Minecraft suspension bridge. You can make good looking suspension bridges over medium gaps, but they really look best in large or even massive scale depending on how patient you are and how big the gap your crossing is. If you’re up for the challenge, I’ll give you a few tips on how to make your next Minecraft suspension bridge a real looker. Start as you would with most Minecraft bridges, by building the deck. Suspension bridges look best with a deck that gradually slopes on both sides. It’s also easiest to make Minecraft suspension bridges in areas where both sides of the gap are at close or identical heights. You will need at least one tower in your bridge. As a good rule of thumb, if you’re making a single tower bridge, the height of the tower above the deck should be half that of the bridges overall span. For example, if you’re making a 100 block long suspension bridge, the tower should reach 50 blocks above the deck. There are two main styles of Minecraft suspension bridges to choose from. You can either stretch your cables directly from the tower, or you can stretch cables out to the ends of the bridge and then have the supporting cables come straight down from the main cable. The second method is quite difficult to achieve properly, but the best advice I can give you is to take some time and if you need utilize some math to determine how steep the curves should be on your main cables, and make sure to incorporate hefty looking anchor on each side of bridge for the main cables to attach to.

Minecraft Bridges 2

Minecraft Bridges 3

Minecraft Drawbridge

Minecraft drawbridges are one of my personal favorites to make. I start these bridges out like all the rest of my bridges, by building a deck. Drawbridges look best when they cross relatively small gaps. The deck should also be straight, or the bridge will tend to look a little funky. You will need to make the tower for the drawbridge at least the height of the bridge's length. When you construct the cables that connect the bridge to the tower, I’ve always been a fan of building what looks like a counterweight system. This is easily achieved by making what looks like channels along the sides of the tower with something that looks like a weight. In the past, I’ve used non-matching fences along with pressure plates to make what looks like a full deck that’s not attached in the center.

Minecraft Bridges 11

Minecraft Bridges 5

Minecraft Bridges 4

So… bridges! Hopefully, this has at least given you a few ideas on your next Minecraft bridge project. This is by no means an all-inclusive listing of bridge types and all of my recommendations are just that, recommendations. In fact some of the best bridges I’ve made break some of the basic guidelines I’ve listed above. In summation I would say the most important factors in making a good Minecraft bridge involve knowing the space you’re working with, taking time to plan out your bridge (even if it involves the ever-dreaded math), building templates with dirt, and not being afraid to destroy large amounts of work if you don’t like how things are turning out. You know what they say when you’re upset about a gap you need to cross, build a bridge and get over it (Sorry, just know it hurt me as much to write that as it did for you to read it)!

Minecraft Bridges 14

Here are a couple good spots to look for additional ideas:

#4285 Epic Mega Wicked Boat Race: Clockwise Edition!!!

Posted by deth_lettuce on 23 July 2016 - 11:06 AM

The race will be Saturday August 6th at 6:00 PM EDT (3:00 PM PDT) on the Pure server.

- Unless there’s popular revolt for an alternate date.  There will be more races as well.

I noticed that the natural rivers around Spawn were nearly connected, and decided they should be.  Check the original thread if you’re curious.  Tons of work went into this course from a large talent pool, and I’m enormously grateful for everyone’s help!

The race takes about an hour and fifteen minutes.  Aside from the fun, lotsa PRIZES:

8 stacks of iron blocks

diamond horse armor

3 saddles

3 nametags

$10,000 Pure Cash

4 stacks of iron blocks

gold horse armor

2 saddles

2 nametags

$5,000 Pure Cash

1 stack of iron blocks

iron horse armor

1 saddle

1 nametag

$1,000 Pure Cash

All other racers who finish the course will get 1 stack of iron ingots and $200 Pure Cash

The start / finish line is southwest of Astoria, and can be accessed by typing /res tp boatrace or by rail from Astoria’s Central Station.

There are tons of great builds in the area, so make sure to spend time there before the race:

Boat Dispensing Area

Visitors Areas - Grandstands for spectators, shops, restaurants

Racer Cabins - Racers can get dyed leather hats and jackets here

Respond to this thread if you’d like to race.  There are 21 spots in the starting gates which we’re unlikely to fill, but we can accommodate more if needed behind those.  The later you sign up, the worse your starting position will be, but that will have very little impact on a race this long.  Your signup number is also your cabin access, if you want your free racing clothes.  Follow the signs at the TP point.

The starting gate has an audible countdown before the gate opens.

There will be several night cycles throughout the race, so skeletons are a real hazard.  They can shoot you and your boat, which either ejects you from your boat, or can even destroy your boat, so BRING EXTRA BOATS.  You can have weapons to fight mobs in case you have a crazy lead and want to snipe a skeleton before it can de-boat you, but breaking other racers’ boats will disqualify you.

Landmarks and Features:

At the start of the race follow the traffic sign, or you’ll be blocked by fence.  Shortly after there’s a one-way fence that will open as you approach.  After that gate, do NOT turn right, go straight to continue the race.

Whenever you see a line of light buoys, don’t cross through them.  Either stay between buoys and land, or between two lines of buoys.  Cutting through them will only take you off course, as there are no shortcuts.

There are a few areas that look like dead ends, but are actually boat elevators.  Boat up to the slime blocks and let them launch you to the next level.  Sometimes it takes a few tries, so once you’re on the slime, don’t keep pressing forward or you’ll get stuck at the wall.  Just sit on the slime until you’re up.  The elevators work in both directions, so if it looks like you’ll boat off a ledge, go for it!  You’ll just fall safely to a lower level and continue.

Forks in the river all go the same way.

Success in this course depends on avoiding collisions, picking the best path between corners, and luck avoiding skeletons.

As always, the most important rule is, don’t be a dick. ;)

After the race: Come to the winner’s podium to see all the gloating and tears at the presentation ceremony. Eat up all the cake and party down.

#3797 Scavenger Hunt Saturday November 7th at 6:00PM EST

Posted by JELLOMIX on 27 October 2015 - 07:19 AM

The time has come for the third (or is it fourth) scavenger hunt on the Pure Server!
The scavenger hunt will take place in and around Ealdor Tor.
Competitors may choose to pair up with one teammate if they desire, or compete solo if they prefer.
The scavenger hunt will be held next Saturday November 7th at 6:00 PM EDT (3:00 PM PDT) starting at Ealdor Tor (/res tp EaldorTor) I would recommend, if you get a chance, familiarizing yourself with the area.
*Warning* The scavenger hunt will take you to parts of the city that are not protected by the residence pluggin. To help protect you out there, all competitors will be provided with complimentary iron armor, a diamond sword, and food which they will get to keep, just for participating! Feel free to wear your own armor if you prefer.
Clues will be in the form Minecraft books with rhymes and riddles. Clues can be found in trapped chests with glowstone behind, beneath or next to them and will frequently look like this:
Clue Chest
Clue Chest
Once you find a clue take only one copy from the chest and each clue will point you in the direction of the next. Another note, I would recommend partnering up with an English speaking partner if English isn't your primary language, as some of the clues can be rather tricky.
Now to the juicy prize the first place winner(s) will receive:
32 iron blocks
32 coal blocks
32 lapis blocks
32 redstone blocks
32 glowstone blocks
and $4000 Pure Cash
As a final note, for at least an hour before the scavenger hunt begins I will be closing down access to Ealdor Tor and the Bazaar in order to place the clues, so if you want to get your bearings, I recommend checking out the area before the day of the hunt.
If you have any questions please post them here.
See you all there in a week and a half!
